Jan 19 24 05:48 am Link Those rates are pretty high but it's a free market economy. Jan 20 24 01:02 pm Link I didn't notice this thread when it was first posted, but I have been following since it has been reborn. I've been on MM since almost the beginning, Dec 2005. Back then, many models and photographers would shoot a lot of TF. What I have noticed recently, though, is that many models, new and inexperienced, and veteran models are expecting a great deal of money for their services. I typically work with traveling models and for a very long time I would pay a model $80 - $100 per hour for a photo shoot. I feel that $80 - $100 is a fair rate for a one hour shoot that would include nudity. I seldom shoot longer than an hour, maybe 90 minutes tops. Today it seems traveling models as well as local models expect $125 - $150 per hour with a two hour minimum. That's a lot of money for a hobbyist, like myself. I don't earn a living from my photography. Never have. I simply enjoy photography as a hobby, nothing more.
I understand, as JSouthworth states, this is a free market economy, and I am being priced out of this free market economy. A traveling model will generally contact me via MM to say she would like to shoot with me and I generally respond with what I am prepared to pay for a one hour shoot. Sometimes I get a positive response, other times silence. I'm not the best photographer to ever pick up a camera. I'm not Walker Evans or Herb Ritts, but I am good at what I do. And so, this is not a rant, just a statement of fact. Jan 21 24 02:07 pm Link The Reagan, Bush, and Trump administrations' tax cuts were designed to make more billionaires and more poor people. My income status is such that I can still afford the inflationary impact of model fees along with everything else I purchase. But I have become more selective. Jan 22 24 02:22 pm Link Model rates depend on the location, the model, the length of the shoot and the concept.
Your results may vary. This has been a public service announcement. Jan 24 24 10:38 pm Link Heh...for me, a middle aged male, TFP is a pretty good rate. I've only actually been paid 4 times, and each of those were $20 per hour. Figure modeling is a bit different though, and I have no delusions about me being special or anything.
I'm sure some models have enough experience to command some of the exorbitant rates being discussed but they'd better be good, on time, and exactly as advertised...IMHO. Jan 30 24 07:54 pm Link Feb 20 24 03:51 pm Link I put on my page this saying I find to be true. "Something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay".
For a "Unicorn" - a nude preg model I am more than happy to pay $350/hour and any travel xpenses. It all depends I guess. And I have found most will not model nude for any lesss yhan $125/hour. Apr 20 24 01:45 pm Link Did not notice this was a ZOMBIE post from FOUR years ago
( makes it even worse I guess ? ) Sad to say, but after one model said "casual clothed" for $250 an hour .... May 13 24 08:36 pm Link Would it be the runabout (hatchback) model Pinto?
My first car was a family hand-me-down 74 pinto station wagon- with the fake wood grain exterior and an automatic transmission. A stick shift runabout would have been cool by comparison. Sorry…what were we talking about? (Not really interested in Kia at all.) Oh- model rates. Right. Yeah. Top rated models can ask for top rates. And? May 14 24 07:35 am Link I do not pay hourly rates for amateurs. I set a fee for a session of so much time. Take it or leave it. Anyone can claim to be worth that kind of money, but I haven't seen much evidence of it here. I also do not book outside of approx. a 50 mile radius. The travel time for longer commutes is too much cost to add to the shoot. Mar 08 25 09:37 am Link Studio NSFW wrote: My first car was a silver 1972 Pinto hatchback with a manual transmission. Loved that little car. Mar 08 25 11:20 am Link Agency type fees, are typically lower than many of these independent and traveling models. Again, in my own area, I look for models who are reasonable, and who are not doing hourly rates. Hourly rates are for agencies. I paid very reasonable fees for amateur models in Dallas. When I paid for agency models direct, I paid very reasonable fees for competent, experienced models in Dallas, hourly. One of best agency models I used, for glamour, was inexperienced, but had all the right assets, and I paid $200. for the day, and provided wardrobe, hair and make up artist, lunch, and my assistant, plus location. We shot everything from fancy dresses to lingerie, to nude. The session went very well, and examples from that are on my photos page. Did the work go more slowly because of the inexperienced model? Yes, but I could deal with that, better than expensive rates.
I taught make up and modeling for various places, in Dallas, as well as acting as runway set-up, lighting, and choreographer, for local fashion shows in Dallas, in addition to photography. One of my models was a fashion stylist, herself. It's up to the photographer, what they pay, but how many sessions can you do, and pay enormous fees? I don't know many millionaire photographers. I believe in paying the model fairly for their time, and rates have gone up, like everything else, but you have to stay realistic. The area I am in now is a fairly large metro area, but also a highly Southern Baptist area, and getting models here is more difficult, especially for anything revealing. There is only one small agency here, and they are mostly providers of local commercial models for TV commercials and trade shows, and not print models. (I did use a couple of them when I was in NC.) However, I continue to look for models that are sensible about rates, and still have some flexibility in genres. Whether that will succeed or not, remains to be seen. I started in a town about 45 mins. north of here, in NC, and I had no problem getting local models there, but I also had a store front, and did both consumer photography and bridal and resort wear, as well as fashion shows, locally, there. I had a tasteful nude, with nothing essential exposed, on my gallery wall, there, and no one had any real objections to it. The model hung it in her own living room. She was quite proud of it. The reason I look for amateur models is they are more sensible about fees, and they want to learn about modeling, whether they ever get professional or not, and I try to work with them, for my own creativity. I don't expect to ever make any money doing that, but I'm retired, so money is not my driving force, but rather artistic creation. As long as the model and I can come to an agreement, that is of benefit to both parties, that is what matters. So, I favor session fees and NOT hourly rates at all, in my situation, that are agreed to, for the session. That is why I may have to switch to other methods of finding models here, than this site, which has not been very productive at all. There were very few local models here, that I would consider using, although I have yet to make any contacts with them, partly due to the way the site works and the limits imposed. I had hoped for a better situation, than I ultimately found. Probably more than you wanted to know, but I am at the age where I don't mind doing some mentoring, if what I share helps someone else. 'Agency type fees' can have a reasonable hourly rate, that is true, BUT they are for CONDITIONAL RIGHTS model releases, not all-rights releases which traveling freelance models typically sign. The attached rights are typically for a specific time duration, a defined amount of media/publication and a set number of impressions. Once you get over this amount there is typically a set schedule of usage fees that are attached.
